The Biggest 10 Mistakes I Made on Twitter (don’t repeat these)
It took me 3 months to figure out how to use Twitter right.
You may find it hard to grow on Twitter, it is hard, but it can be an easy process if you learn from these mistakes.
Before starting, building an audience organically is hard on any platform. It is not just creating content. Every platform has its unique content types and tasks you need to do. The first thing is to have a long-term growth mindset. It is not a one-night success.
Okay, let’s begin.
1. Engaging Less
Twitter is a platform that encourages both giving and receiving content.
But first, you give, and then give more, and then you take.
Interact with other accounts and add something of value to the comments section of their tweets.
If you regularly comment on at least 10–15 accounts, they will notice you.
I wasted the first few months just thinking about
- tweets I post
- likes I get
- comments I get
It didn’t work well.
The best way to get people to pay attention to you is to engage with them.
2. Learn from Big Account in Your Niche
Learn how they tweet.
Learn how they are structuring their tweets
Bookmark those good tweets and rewrite those in your language.
Learning from successful big accounts is the best thing I learned so far.
3. Use DMs
DM means Direct Message
When I started I never send a DM to anybody, I was shy.
Twitter is the best networking tool, but I never use the most effective tool.
But today I DM big accounts I inspire, also I get lots of DMs, and if I can help them I am happy to help anyone.
Always give, and be nice to others, don't forget where you came from. People need your help, if they ask or if you find someone you can help, help them.
Helping people and seeing how they grow is real happiness.
4. Optimize Your Bio
Bio means the description of yourself when you go to your profile.
Bio plays the most vital role in converting profile visits to followers.
In your Bio, you should answer these three questions:
- Who are you
- What you do
- What you can expect from me?
Here is a sample Bio.
5. Thread is the Real Hack
Threads are a series of tweets following each other.
It is like a blog post on Twitter.
But if you have read a thread, you will find people follow specific formats to deliver threads, unlike blog posts. (in this story I am not going in deep into the thread)
If you are above 1K spend time to write at least 1 thread per week, but you need to provide value, if you can do that consistently you will get more engagement + more followers.
6. You are not expecting to Go Viral
This is not something you want, this is not what you are working for.
Remember, getting more followers or likes is just dopamine, it is nothing for your actual growth.
If you are a person who wants to get more likes, retweets, comments, and followers you can get it easily by buying retweets and followers or by using Twitter bots. But that is not something you are working for.
What I am showing you is to grow organically to build a high engaging audience, so that later you can make money.
7. You dont need to learn how Twitter Algorithm works
Learning how Twitter works, or the Twitter algorithm works to get more like is a waste of time.
Instead, focus on providing valuable content.
I bet you don’t need more than 6 months to feel the compounding growth.
What is hard is to stay consistent and disciplined at the beginning.
8. Take Advantage of Analytics
Twitter provides free analytics of your accounts.
But if you are a complete beginner, you dont need to spend hours here.
Use Twitter analytics to find the tweets which have more engagements.
Here is how you can find the best engaging Tweets:
- Go to Twitter Analytics > Tweets (at the top)
- Click Top Tweets.
9. Reuse Old Content
This is the reason you find the best engaging tweets.
You can reuse it.
It is okay to use as it is, but try to make it better.
But if you are reusing it as it is, use it after 1 or 2 months, because your followers don’t want to see repeated content.
10. Use Twitter List
Very recently I started using Twitter Lists, this is the best trick I learned to engage better.
Create a list and add accounts you want to engage with so that it is easy for you to comment on those tweets.
Here is the difference between a list from Tweet Hunter(left side)and a list from Twitter(right side)Looks.
Those are the 10 biggest mistakes I made when I started my Twitter journey.
